Unearth Spooky Savings: Thrifting Your Halloween Tablescape

Halloween month is here, and while the temptation to buy all things brand-new and sparkly is strong, your wallet (and the planet!) might thank you for considering a more sustainable approach. Enter: thrifting!

Not only is thrifting kinder to your budget and the environment, but it also opens up a world of unique, vintage, and sometimes downright quirky finds you wouldn't discover elsewhere. This year, ditch the mass-produced Halloween decor and embrace the thrill of the thrift for a truly one-of-a-kind tablescape.

Where to Haunt for Treasures:

  • Thrift stores: Goodwill, Salvation Army, local charity shops – these are your treasure troves!

  • Flea markets:  A haven for vintage and antique finds with tons of character.

  • Consignment shops: Often have higher quality items, sometimes even designer pieces. Perhaps that Crate & Barrel Pumpkin is waiting for you on a shelf tucked away at a local curated boutique.

  • Your Neighbors:  OfferUp & Facebook Marketplace are great ways to find super affordable deals for easy local pick up.

Ghoulishly Good Finds:

Here's what to keep an eye out for while you're on your thrifting adventures:

  • Vintage linens:  Think old lace tablecloths, embroidered napkins with spooky motifs, or even slightly tattered fabrics for a touch of eerie elegance. Layering can really elevate the style as well.

  • Candlesticks and candelabras: Brass, silver, or even quirky ceramic ones can add a touch of gothic charm. Mismatched is totally cool!

  • Vases and jars:  Perfect for holding spooky floral arrangements, creepy crawlies (toy ones, of course!), or even just colored water with floating candles.

  • Old books:  Stack them up and use them as risers for your decor, or even rip out a few pages to create eerie paper bats or ghostly silhouettes.

  • Picture frames:  Empty frames can be painted black and stenciled in ghosts or adorned with cobwebs for a spooky chic look. You can also insert vintage Halloween postcards or your own spooky artwork.

  • Serving dishes with character: Look for unique platters, bowls, and serving trays with interesting patterns or textures to stack different levels on your table.

Tips for a Killer Thrifted Tablescape:

  • Don't be afraid to DIY: A little paint, some glue, and a dash of creativity can transform even the most mundane thrift store find into a Halloween masterpiece.

  • Embrace imperfection:  Chipped paint, worn edges, and "flaws" add to the charm and character of a thrifted tablescape.

  • Mix and match: Don't be afraid to combine different styles and eras for an eclectic and unique look.

  • Think outside the box:  A vintage birdcage could become a spooky centerpiece, old keys can be scattered around for an eerie touch, and even old crow figurines would be cool sitting on the table. Grab sticks from your backyard or neighborhood to create a creepy indoor tree as your centerpiece, from which you can hang paper bats or witches' hats for a touch of spooky elegance.

I can't believe I just thrifted this amazing runner with black scalloped edges, it was perfect for this! I just layered over some tattered Halloween gauze to give it a whethered edge.

Another goal I had was to be sure I could easily switch this from Halloween to Thanksgiving in just a few weeks by taking away the spooky stuff but keeping in the pumpkin/harvest theme. I'm always trying to repurpose what I already have.

This Halloween, skip the pricey pre-made decorations and unleash your inner ghoul at the thrift store. With a little imagination and some savvy thrifting skills, you can create a Halloween tablescape that's both stylish and sustainable. Happy haunting!
